CITY TOURS
Discover Houston Tours' city tour itineraries come in many different sizes and
flavors.
A
Basic City Tour
usually takes 3 hours and covers Downtown, the Museum District,
the Texas Medical Center, Reliant Park, Uptown Houston and the Galleria, and
River Oaks, with from one-three rest stops and/or photo opportunities: the
Visitors Center at City Hall, the Museum District, and/or the Williams Water
Wall in Uptown Houston. Fee: $240 Step-on Guide Fee,
admissions and meals not included.
Longer
itineraries can add time for lunch, longer stays at a particular
stop, or trips through other neighborhoods.
For
instance, on a
Full Day City Tour
(10 a.m.-3 p.m., $300 Step-on Guide Fee, admissions and meals not included),
your step-on guide can meet you at your hotel or at the Visitors Center at City
Hall, then take you around downtown, where Houston began in 1836. You can
include a tour of the historic house museums in Sam Houston Park, a short
TunnelWalk with a stop in a sky lobby, a tour of the 1913 Post Rice Lofts, a
mini-tour of a sports stadium or a short ride on MetroRail. Before
leaving downtown, drive past towering skyscrapers designed by such architectural
giants as I. M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, and Philip Johnson and world-class sculpture
by Dubuffet, Miro, and Nevelson; navigate the compact Theater District, home to
the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Bayou Place, Landry's Downtown
Aquarium, Wortham Theater Center, the Alley Theatre, and the Jones Hall for the
Performing Arts; or enjoy a change of pace in the Downtown Historic District
with historic buildings, sidewalk cafes, and fountains.
Now it's time to travel through Houston's first suburb, the historic Houston
Heights, where Queen Anne Victorian mansions sit side-by-side with bungalows,
parks, and churches. A series of freeways then whisks you into Hermann
Park and the Museum District, where you can stroll through the Cullen Sculpture
Garden or stop inside one of the District's 16 museums.
Ready for lunch? Choose from a casual lunch at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston or an al fresco snack at any
one of the delightful bistros in Rice Village or Montrose. You might even
want to include some time for browsing boutiques and galleries.
But,
wait! There's still more to see in the nation's fourth largest city.
Head down South Main Street past the Texas Medical Center, scoot around Reliant
Park for views of the Reliant Astrodome (the 8th Wonder of the World) and Reliant
Stadium, home of the 2004 Super Bowl. Loop 610 takes you west to Uptown Houston and a chance to get
out and gaze at Philip Johnson & John Burgee's masterpieces: Williams Tower and
the Williams Water Wall. Since you're right next to TheGalleria on Post
Oak Boulevard, you might want to take some time to shop and have a snack.
But if studying the lifestyles of the rich and famous is more your speed, end
your tour with a drive through River Oaks and marvel at mansions ($17 million
and up) and modest homes ($750,000-$2 million), surrounded by luxuriant gardens.
If you have some time left over, you could arrange a tour at one of the Museum
of Fine Arts, Houston's house museums in River Oaks: Bayou Bend and Rienzi.
It's time to head home, but keep in mind, you've only just started your Houston
adventure. Before leaving H-Town, why not add some of our other Group
Tours to your list.
