SPEND A DAY IN HOUSTON'S HEAVENLY HEIGHTS
Houston Heights was incorporated in 1896 as an independent municipality and was not annexed by the City of Houston until 1918. Considered the oldest intact neighborhood in Houston, it still retains the character of a small town. Today, restored old homes sit next to new "old" homes and really new homes, but the Houston Heights still retains the feel of a bygone time. Your A Day in the Heights can include: Architecture -- Queen Anne Victorian "cottages" dating back to 1898 (pictured above), bungalows, foursquares, and new townhouses looking like they just arrived from old San Francisco or New Orleans History -- Did you know that the world's largest funeral service business started on Heights Boulevard? Restaurants featuring everything from avant garde cuisine to BBQ to superb sandwiches to fish tacos to old-fashioned ice cream cones or milkshakes Shopping at antique emporiums, galleries featuring folk art & fine art, and a men's store that has outfitted both Bush presidents for their inaugurations. |
